Telemark? What’s that? It is, infact, a skiing technique with the skiier in a knelt position (the famous genuflexion consisting in a series of scissor like movements) which is at once aesthetically pleasing and extremely physical . The very first change of direction or cornering done by a skier was in the Norwegian province of Telemark. Sondre Norheim, who discovered the technique, also invented parabolic skis. For social reasons (Sondre Norheim being born into a rural family), the Christiana technique was also invented by the Bourgeoisie of the period. This technique, whereby the skiier’s heel is attached to the ski, invaded Europe and brought about the 'disappearance' of Telemark even in Norway. It’s recent comeback is somewhat due to the USA and Canada, where 50% of skiers are telemarkers. Telemark (or free heel) is a different way of skiing, a fresh experience, a way to improve your skills, a way of experiencing more freedom on the snow. Practising at a ski resort is a great way to learn the basics, but the long term aim should be to get out into the mountains. «The ski resorts of your telemark success» In our home of the Hautes Pyrenees, we have 5 neighbouring ski resorts in la vallée des gaves: Baréges-La mongie, Luz Ardiden, Cauterêts, Hautacam «The telemark excursions of your dreams» In our home in la vallée des gaves, Hautes Pyrenees, we have 100’s of itineraries to suit all ages and abilities.
